Californication Is A Bit Dark But Is Not A One-Dimensional Series
With a name like Californication , one could get the idea that the popular TV program is a bit seedier than it actually is, but it is a quality production which I really enjoy watching. The fact that I am a big David Duchovny fan may have something to do with it. I was a huge fan of another program that Duchovny was well-known for. I watched the 1990’s series The X-Files religiously and despite its successful and long-enduring run, I was quite disappointed when it went off the air. I watch Californication on DISH Network satellite TV. There are a number of DISH Network Deals for almost any budget.
The show features Hank Moody, the lead character, who is played by Duchovny. Moody’s life is troubled and he struggles with problems while trying to hold his family together. Even though Moody is a successful author who has penned a series of best-selling books, his personal life is not quite as rosy. Hank is a troubled individual who buries himself in women, booze, and drugs to escape what he describes as self loathing due to his current family issues.
Moody may not seem like the kind of person who would have so many personal problems since he has a wonderful girlfriend, Karen, and a daughter named Becca. Hank has always had relationship problems with his girlfriend Karen and they have been together on and off many times throughout the series, however Hank can never seem to keep her, as he is always caught making grave mistakes, and Karen cannot bear to see what it does to their daughter.
Drinking in bars and picking up women for one-night stands are behaviors that seem to have taken over Moody’s life, which seems to be spinning out of control. It’s clear that the single most important thing in his life is his daughter Becca, who he loves dearly and hates putting her through so much pain.
Charlie and Marcy Runkel are a couple that is quite friendly with both Moody and his girlfriend Karen. These four are a great group together and Hank tries his hardest to get his act together, he has a difficult time letting Karen go and won’t give up until he gets his family all back together.
Saving the series from being too depressing, there is a good dose of more light-hearted content to balance things out. Even though some elements of Moody’s life might seem enviable on the surface, the misery that results from his decadent behavior gives us a picture that is probably more accurate when one behaves the way he does. The show is well-written and creates a believable story of a man who’s out-of-control life is taking its toll on himself and his loved ones.
During the series he attempts to reconnect with all of his closest friends and get his life straight but the flow of alcohol and beautiful women never stop swarming towards him and each time he gives in and drowns himself in his guilty pleasures. The writers always keep viewers wondering whether Duchovny’s character will ever be successful in getting his life the way he wants it. The series airs on the Showtime channel, which is available from most cable and satellite providers.
