Take for example the words fat and slim. They are antonyms which mean fat is the opposite of slim and vice versa. However, when coming along with an expression, those words become the same in meaning like “A fat chance is a slim chance.” See?
There are pronunciation points, to name a few: laid is pronounced as paid but not said for it sounds like bread. Tear and tier have the same pronunciation but how come “tear in the eye” and “tear the dress” don’t have? The word queue is simply “Q” yet it has four other silent letters! Amazing!
Look at how punctuation marks work in these sentences: “A woman without her man is nothing.” Compare it with this, “A woman: without her, man is nothing.” Certainly, views differ. Therefore, don’t get me wrong.
It is indeed confusing but once you get to know the rules, the English language becomes more fun.
